The Addiction Vaccine

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/04/health/04vaccine.html?scp=4&sq=addiction&st=cse

This article talks about the idea of having a vaccine that will prevent people from having addictions. It says that when they get it to work it will help smokers to not feel anything when they light up a cigarette, or for people who are addicted to cocaine to not have any of the pleasant feelings they would normally have without the vaccine.  They say this is working with rats, but do you think it is possible to work on humans? If it does work then what would be the effects on the community? What are some of the positive things that could come out of it? What about the negative effects?

Do you think it is ethical to be conducting animal testing for something that seems to be extremely doubted and unnecessary? Do you think people with addictions that take this vaccine would then have the ability to get addicted to the vaccine itself? Would addiction then primarily be taken care of in hospitals rather than in therapy like settings?

  1. I don't think this would work, but if it were to work, is this now condoning the substance abuse knowing their is a pill to cure the addiction? I also don't believe this will work because the body mass of a human is far more greater than a rat and because what if the person becomes addicted to the feeling of being able to do something without becoming addicted to the substance. I would be afraid that a crack feign would supposedly not feel the affects of cocaine and would feel the need to use it more because they know they won't get addicted but their bodies would still have the substance. I believe to totally feign a addicted off of a substance is to completely detox it from the substance having them feel the withdraw aspects to truly feel what they are coming out of and feel the contrast relieved feeling once the detox is over rather than having a vaccine cure the addiction. if that makes any sense.

  2. I believe that this will work on humans. The article states that it has already worked for a cocaine addict, which says that they’re on the right track to get more kinds of addiction vaccines working. The only concern I have for this is that the vaccine wouldn’t help because they addict would seek out other forms of drugs to get high from. This is ethical because it is necessary, and because as far as we know, the vaccines tested help the animals, not hurt them. The article also mentions that the vaccine produces a small high, which makes the possibility of being addicted to the vaccine not possible. If they become immune to drugs, then they can’t get high from it again. And finally, if all of these addiction vaccines work, then yes, hospitals would take care of addictions, but there will still be those that choose to go through therapy.

  3. I also think that the vaccine would work since the addicts do drugs so that they make themselves feel happy but if the vaccine makes their source of happiness feel worthless to the addicts, they would eventually stop using them and try and find something else that would make them happy. So i think that the vaccine would work in stopping the addicts from using the drugs but that might lead to some other addiction which might not be a substance addiction. When they experiment these vaccines, they have specific animals they test them on like rats because even if they die during the experiment, they can reproduce themselves fast. I think that nothing can be done without having to sacrifice one thing or the other.

  4. I agree with Sherman, and I do not feel that this would work. But if it did work, I think that it would just create more substance abusers. The vaccine gives people a reason to do it more, they can experiment and then know that there is a cure if they want to get better quick. Also the vaccine could become a new thing for people to get addicted to....

  5. I don't think this would be a good idea. As we have always been talking about, addiction is a kind of mental disorder, is motivated by a need for security. So it may cannot be solved by chemical. Letting people lose iterst in cigratte or alcohol cannot solve the essential problem. people will still get addicted to other obects as long as their need haven't been fulfiled.

And, it's true that people will witch their attention to vaccine itself. Controlling vaccine will be even harder because it is taken as medicine. I even think that the only group can benefit from it is the hospital. It is the most efficient way to stop addiction, but can never really cure people, so addicts will be sent to get vaccine over and over again.

  6. i agree with Sherman that this vaccine will not work because how can there be a another drug that prevents addictions? doesn't that just set human's up for failure to become addicted to this drug also? Also, this sets society up to downgrade because then addicts will think its okay to continue their already problematic lifestyle because they don't have to worry about being addicted anymore, and other people who once avoided drugs because of the problems addictions cause will then begin to practice addictive behaviors just because they know this vaccine will keep them from getting addicted.

  7. I think if a vaccine for substance abuse is developed that a lot of people who want to stop being addicts will have an easier time doing so, though, like is said in the article, someone who’s given a vaccine for one drug could simply turn to another to get high.

I don’t think that anybody will get addicted to the vaccine, as there isn’t anything addictive about it.

Some people turn to drugs to escape other problems in their lives. In these cases, while a vaccine might help them kick their habits, they would still need to undergo some therapy to overcome what initially led them to their addictions.

  8. i think that this corrective measure is not going to work because the addict might in the long term will also be addicted to the vaccine. The reason being that the continuous and uncontrollable use of a particular substance is what causes an addiction.
